Thursday 25 July 2024: Editing all day

We had an early start yesterday. My car was due in for its MOT first thing and the poet was following me. I put a load of washing through while the poet fed the birds, then we had breakfast. Immediately after breakfast, we were off. I was 10 minutes early for the MOT, but I think he took it in straight away. He was also re-gassing my air-conditioning.

When we got back, I hung out the washing and put another 2 loads through. Then I had a good session on the editing job while my weekly tech scan ran. The poet did some work, but he also made a loaf of bread (from scratch, in the oven). I hung out the 2nd washload and put the 3rd through the dryer.

We got the call that my car was ready (it passed!), the poet knocked his dough back, and off we went again. When we got back, he put his loaf in the oven, and I did a bit more editing. By the time the bread was ready for nice cheese sandwiches, I’d cleared 39 pages all together, leaving just 14 left for the afternoon session. Over dinner I caught up on blogs and comments.

Right after dinner, we were off again, this time to take his car in to have some work done today. We couldn’t take it in this morning, because we were already taking the campervan for its MOT. So we dropped his car off yesterday afternoon. We have to go back later today to collect it – if it’s ready. If it isn’t ready, it’s staying there for the next week as we don’t have time tomorrow to go and get it.

When we got back again, I started today’s blog post, and then finished the editing job. I sacrificed my writing to get this job done because I can take the writing with me on holiday. I don’t want to take the editing with me on holiday. Those days are long gone.

An email came in from the editing client about the book I’m still awaiting proofreader’s report for. They’ve selected the pictures, so I don’t have to edit all of the captions. I fired off a reply and let her know I was still working on the Holocaust book. And oh, what a book. It’s the second book I’ve edited for this author. She apparently asked for me this time, which is nice.

This one is about German Jews who were persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust. So sad. So heartbreaking. More so too, probably, because I have a friend whose mother is a Holocaust survivor. Still. And one of the family names in the book is very similar to her family name. But not the same.

I was just coming to the end of my editing when the poet jumped up saying “It’s raining!”, and we had to go out and get the washing in quick. Good job he was paying attention. The washing was almost dry and I hadn’t noticed the rain from my reading chair.

We went back to the office and I finished the hard-copy edit at around 5:30pm. Today I transfer those edits to screen. After we’ve taken the campervan for its MOT…wish us luck!
