The campervan was due in for its first service (with us) and we got up early to go and collect it. I dropped the poet off at the compound, followed him to the garage, and then brought us both home. When we got in we had our breakfast before the poet went into a couple of meetings.
I added some final tweaks to yesterday’s blog post and published it. And then I got distracted. My weekly backup was overdue, and before I do a backup, I always make sure I’ve collected any Kindle books. While I was doing that, I went through a load of ebooks, converted them to epub, added covers that work on both Kindle and Google Books, the uploaded them to Google Books.
I only got as far as books collected since the beginning of July, but I think I have a few going back to earlier in the year that still need doing. I could have quite easily spent all day doing it, and some. I moved all of the books I’d converted to one folder, then backed up all of my Calibre library to another folder.
I did a few checks on the newsletter. The poet didn’t receive his (it’s a good test) so I logged a call and they said they’ve fixed it for next time but it’s something Microsoft does to delay mail-outs. I noticed a typo and a link that doesn’t work. I’ve fixed the link for next time, but I had to leave the typo.
Regarding the MS delay, I usually expect gmail emails to get stuck, but Email Octopus doesn’t seem to have that problem. Plus, other Hotmail accounts have received and open theirs. But at the time of writing, the poet still hadn’t received his. If you haven’t received yours, do let me know. You can email me at my first name @ my domain name, if you don’t have my regular email address and don’t want to leave a comment here.
(NOTE TO SELF: Check domain email more often.) (Goes and checks it right now…and sees an email!)
The faffing with ebooks took me right up to dinnertime and beyond. We had turkey sandwiches and meringue nests again and when I got back to my desk, I started the backup and today’s blog post. I expected it to take longer now that I’d pretty much duplicated my Calibre content. And I did some Probate work – we were finally ready to sign off on the accounts. Yay!
Then I turned to the proofreading job and started transferring the markups over.
We had to go back and get the campervan before (a) the garage closed, and (b) the lockup closed (in case the garage worked overtime). But once we got back, it was back to the markups. I’d lost around an hour of my working day, maybe 2 max, by the time we finished running around. So I carried on working until 7pm, resolving the last of the Probate issues (said she hopefully) in between chapters.
Mine came through just fine, thank you!
The conversion/saving the ebooks always takes more time than I expect. It’s frustrating.
Thank you for letting me know. It’s my first Email Octopus mailing, so I expected teething issues.
If I set a regular slot to do the conversions, it wouldn’t be such an impact. Doing it in bulk isn’t the right way to do it, is it?
