Monday 13 January 2025: Space opera workshop starts today

We had a late start on Friday. A very late start. And I’d finished work late the day before and not had chance to pre-write and schedule Friday’s blog post. So when I did eventually arrive at my desk on Friday, that was the first job I did.

The next thing I did Friday morning was a new 7-week menu plan. We already had a 4-week plan, to see how it went. But a few times we’ve thought about other meals to add too. With me being told to eat a low fat diet between now and my operation, I thought it was the ideal time to make the plan cover more weeks. I was going to do a 6-week plan, but I had enough space to do 7. So that’s what I did.

I think I did really well to come up with 7 days of evening meals and puddings for nearly 7 weeks. I ran out of ideas mid-Week 7 and asked the poet for suggestions. But once I’d completed the plan, we decided which week we’d be starting on and I wrote out our shopping list. With grand-doggy #1 coming, we wanted to get the shopping done and then go and get him. But son #2 called and asked if he could fetch him over sooner, saying he’d be all right for an hour while we did the shopping.

Monkey Dust had a good rehearsal on Thursday night. The poet used his in-ear monitors to try and stop himself getting too shouty if he couldn’t hear his vocals, and they ran through 9 songs. Including the song that revealed he’d broken his voice all those weeks ago.

They had discussed dropping a key for everything, even though they all know the songs they do in the key they do them in. But as it happened, with him listening to his own voice, there wasn’t a need to do that after all. They’re going to have another rehearsal this week, and run through another 9 songs, and another rehearsal next week.

He gave me the go ahead to start work on the next gig poster, and after he got home with a takeaway for tea, the next venue along asked for a poster too. So there’s 2 jobs I’m doing today that I wasn’t sure I’d be doing this time last week.

I discussed my idea of doing a timesheet for all the work I do and maybe issuing an invoice to, say, the band for doing the poster work. He thinks it’s something worth giving more thought.

My financial year finishes on 5 April, along with the government financial year (it was easier for me to do it then), so that gives me a potential target date to make my decision about a limited company. I don’t think it will be an overnight adjustment. I’ll have to find out how long that kind of thing takes. But it’s there, in the mix.

I shared Friday’s blog post, and made a start on today’s. The dog arrived a few hours early, which meant we didn’t have to go and do the shopping before he got here. I’d sooner let him settle for a night before leaving him for an hour, so we decided to go on Saturday instead.

And I finally got Fluff Busting Facebook Purity to work on my computer. I had it on the windows computer, but it’s taken me this long to work out how to install it on the Mac. I am so much happier now that’s working again, although I’ve already decided to reduce my time on FB, as have so many others, following the most recent news about fact checking, or not.

The poet, who was working from home, did the garden bird second feed once the dog was settled, which saved me a job.

The client author I queried regarding my next editing job did the work I asked him to and sent me a new version of the file. I’ll print that off this week so I can start work on it as soon as I can. I already know it’s a heavy topic, but we’ve worked together before. I need to allocate this job the time it deserves now.

A query came in for another job, this time just a proofread. I responded by return with my rate and timescale. Then I worked on this week’s diary.

The space opera workshop starts today. The videos won’t be available until this evening their time, though, so I’ll be watching them a day late.

  1. I hope you enjoy the workshop, and have fun with the dog.

I’m cutting way back on Facebook and Threads, though not deleting my accounts (yet). Instagram is going to be the hard one for me to lose. But I am a human, not a “household object” and I don’t want Meta to get even a penny from me.

  2. I won’t be able to watch the first workshop video until tomorrow, probably tomorrow afternoon. He records them quite late at night and they’re on Vegas time.

I think our social media accounts will be stripped back soon, to a bare minimum for both businesses (mine and the band’s) to function.
